Ever wonder what it feels like when your wildest dreams suddenly become reality?
I just watched it happen.
There’s this songwriter, Doug, who lives in a tiny town outside Ottawa, Canada. The kind of place where the local diner knows your order before you sit down, and everyone’s got an opinion about the maple syrup at the farmers’ market.
For years, Doug wrote jazz pieces after getting home from work. He never thought they’d go further than the local coffee shops and clubs where he played on weekends.
Then it happened.
I introduced him to the music supervisor for the movie and they hit it off…
It got into the director’s ear…
And suddenly, 3 of Doug’s tracks were heading to Cannes.
But here’s the crazy part – the film won. Then came the Golden Globe nomination. And now…
It’s all over the news that it’s been nominated for 6 Academy Awards!
This is a guy who rarely leaves his small town. Who plays music with the same local guys he always has.
And now his music is in ‘Anora’ – nominated for multiple Oscars.
But you know what’s really interesting?
Doug didn’t change his process. He didn’t try to write “Hollywood” music. He didn’t abandon his style when success came knocking.
He just kept doing what he’d always done – writing honest music that meant something to him.
This is exactly what separates truly great artists from the rest.
When success hits, most people panic. They try to change everything about themselves to fit what they think others want.
But real artistic mastery isn’t about changing who you are.
For example, when a big opportunity comes your way…
Or when you realize your art could reach millions…
What do you do then?
Following trends can sometimes get you places if you are early enough.
But staying true to your authentic voice is key.
This is exactly why sticking with your unique artistic vision is so powerful—because it gives you the confidence to keep creating, no matter how big the spotlight gets.
Chris
PS. Not only did Doug get 3 tracks into the film, but I also helped another songwriter get another 2 into it as well!
Hey! Give us a shout about anything really.
Our goal is for you to start getting your music into TV & film.
