How This Indie Artist Succeeds In Licensing

September 21, 2017

In this interview segment, Abby Posner, an indie songwriter here in LA reveals one of the ways she keeps getting songs placed in TV & film. I met up with her at her house where she does all her recording in her tiny home studio.

We will be including the full interview in our upcoming course, The Art Of The Song Pitch, at the end of October.  Abby will get deep into her songwriting approach and the other lucrative ways she licenses her music.

Feel free to leave a comment below the video and let me know if you can imagine yourself doing the same thing as Abby has done.

Thank you for the info! I guess the first thing to do after making a song is copyright the material sign up with BMI/ASCAP then start pitching. How do you find where to pitch it to?

    • Chris SD says:

Hi Bach, we always advise songwriters to try and get hooked up with a licensing agent (aka song plugger). They have the relationships with the music supervisors you are trying to target. You can find their info in the Film & Television Music Guide. http://www.musicregistry.com/ You have to buy it but it’s worth its weight in gold if you are actively targeting and pitching your songs. Make sure you do your research to find out what kind of music they deal with first so your music is targeted to the right agents. Hope that helps!

I wrote the words to "BLOOD OF CHRIST"
I wanted to know the value of the words themselves
    In the market today
I really just expected a number value response simple to do I assumed so I submit my words to majestic records asking for an appraisal of the words
They within hours responded back with a recording contract offer for me .

I was uneducated as to the record contract and was like wow a recording contract
    This requires decisions
That I wasn’t prepared to decide on I just expected a general numeric value as a response
They think it could be a hit
Etc I kept the recording contract they sent after a few days I signed it but I’m supposed to return it to majestic records
I still for some reason haven’t sent or put it in us mail to return it
Something is stopping me and I don’t know what it is
Anyways I’m proud of the work and humble for the recording contract

    Thank you

Great job Abby! I really want to do this also (get my music placed in TV/film and make $ from). I have been accepted by several licensing companies, and my music has been in their libraries for over 4 years. But, no placements yet. Is there anything we can do to speed up the process?-Adam

Being persistent and knowing your creativity is smart work; Especially is what she does. I believe I can be and is that way also. I just need to get going like now. Thank You for this video.

  8. Amber says:

Really want to do this. I just need to find a show/movie that is a good fit for my music, pitch it and hope someone listens to it and takes a chance on my music. Just trying to understand all of the processes that go along with this as well.

  9. Ava Lemert says:

That’s good to know about reaching out to your PRO – in my case, BMI, and not just assume they’re getting all that should be reported to them on your behalf. Especially, as I’m completely self-published, self-managed.
