They need Christmas songs NOW

July 25, 2024

Ever wondered how to write and produce the best Christmas track?

Also wondering why I am asking you this in July? 🙂

It’s actually Christmas time right now in the sync world. Music supervisors are looking for tracks right now for their holiday projects.

In this video I talk about how to create the perfect one.

    Hey Chris.
Thanks for the great advice. Every year I try to write a Christmas song but get put off by the “Christmassiness” of it and give up. This I’ve got a lovely beauty !

about summer….quick family reunion — including an LA luthier and a Pittsburg music afficianado.. but after that! Oh man i shot video at my girlfriend’s insanely wild and beautiful virginia farm…. her 6yr old niece jumped off the john deere, climbed over the white fence and proceeded to run like the wind all the LONG way back to the house. I filmed the whole thing. It was so beautiful watching her….she just kept running—The song is writing itself! <3 thanks Chris… i dont have a christmas song yet… !

  5. MERRY SHERIDAN says:

Great advice, Chris!! My birthday is on the holiday and I think Christmas 24/7!! Working on a new one right now. I’d love your feedback on this…

Thank you for this Chris!! Always helpful!

As artists, we need time away to refill the well

  8. Timothy Madigan says:

Hi Chris- here’s the link to my disco account and the song
"The Sounds of Christmas" Thanks for the opportunity to
find a place for this song.

  9. Bob Doucet says:

Hi Chris, thanks for this! I wrote a country-ish Christmas song a few years ago that people seemed to enjoy when I played it locally, the problem is it’s a tall tale about Rudolph flying off with my mandolin when my band played a gig at the North Pole, and not sure if I can use it; uncertain about legal issues.

Love your video! I’m looking forward to a return to Edinburgh, a chance to play live music in some great pubs!

  10. Dennis Bethuy says:

Heyo Chris, Thank you for the opportunity to pitch for music,TV and films. Can I receive a link for submissions.

  11. Duane Andrews says:

I recognized a couple places in the video. That made me very happy for you. I have a thanksgiving song.
Tastefully done -family worthy in slightly naughty double entendre

    • Chris SD says:

Sounds good, Duane. We can’t use a Thanksgiving song right now, but send in a Christmas song if you have one.

  12. roderick brown says:

Thanks for the beautiful travel log and the great music accompanying it. I think we all need to take a cleansing breath. I usually fit in an hour of bike riding along the Broad River canal park, here in Columbia, SC. Recently I’ve been surprised to find the occasional allegator–maybe the same one who is checking me out as well. Usually, they don’t come this far north of the lowlands. Short mini escapes like that have become SOP for lifting the spirits. As for Christmas music, I’ve been sending my instrumental version; "Silent Night Reverie" with string bass, and percussion–my arrangement of a jazz version. Like to think it has an identifiable Rod Brown thumb print! I sent it along with a couple of other tunes to Chris Mollere on 7/12. It takes me a while to get in the Christmas spirit!
Thanks again for permission to relax! Rod

    • Chris SD says:

Nice, and glad you enjoyed the short video. Yes, I am surprised the gators are that far north as well. Keep an eye on your inbox for the submission instructions.

  13. Freedom says:

    Hi Chris

I believe I have a unique song that talks about some of the joys of Christmas sprit while it does what you said and how producers want it written..

I wrote it on a train many years ago. The hook line is,” Rolling through a snowy white USA, nurturing wisdom for the truth way “

I can send the recording of it along with the lyrics. Where can I send it to?

  14. Jacqueline Durbin says:

Thank you for this insight! Resting and seeing the world from a different perspective, as well as writing music that’s authentic and not trying to fit it into a box is really good food for thought.

  15. Johnny Torres says:

    Man, I love ya!
    Summers been amazing!!
I’m not just this.. It is this experience, time I have spent with you and your team. I’m so excited to go into this next chapter of my life in songwriting. Thanks to you my brother.. !
Respect, love and gratitude for you all!
    Wait!
    I think I’m gonna put that in a song😜
    🙏🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼✌🏼🤟🏼
    Always rockin,
    Johnny Torres

  16. Dra Hill says:

Where do I submit the Christmas Songs?

  17. Kelly Brown says:

Loved your video. The theme of a continuous path made of different paths was awesome. Thank you for that!

I have several mini trips planned in different locations – some involving music and others, family celebrations. Variety is the theme for my summer.

I have lots of Christmas stuff and some unfinished work. I will dig into my files (and iPhone).

    Appreciate the inspiration!
    Kelly Brown

  24. Lori Ingberg says:

    Hi Chris!

Your summer looks awesome!!! Beautiful scenery and spaces.

I am going to be making a short trip to celebrate a special occasion with family members I have not seen for a while, and am hoping to make some real progress on what should be a life improving project once I get back.

Am I correct that if this is the time to pitch Christmas songs that ‘‘tis also the season for New Years songs?

    Thanks!

    Lori Ingberg

    • Chris SD says:

Great to hear, Lori. I have never thought about New Years songs, but I will ask what my music supervisor friends say about projects for that.

  25. William says:

    Hi Chris!

    Thanks for such sage advice!
I finally went on a trip this year after many years of not. Felt great to shake up the routine.
I’m working on several Christmas songs but sadly, won’t be ready this year. I’ll have to wait for next July!

  31. Andrea L. Baker says:

    Thanks Chris,
Spending this summer with family. I am visiting different cities such as Orlando, Atlanta, and Cleveland. thanks for advice because experiencing family puts me in the mindset of the holidays especially Christmas. Had not thought about creating another Christmas Song but will now. Will attempt to send soon. Have a great rest of your summer.

  32. Mike Nash-Whitmore says:

Hi Chris, I have a rough mix of an original Christmas song that I’d like to submit but I want to re-do the vocals as I’ve upgraded my equipment. Should I submit the rough mix now or wait until I’ve finished the vocal recording?

  33. Harry Sprott says:

Thanks Chris, I have two I’d love to submit. Looking forward to the link tomorrow. Never too early to be thinking ahead.

  34. Jim stallings says:

Thanks for the thoughts – my wife and i are in the process of moving out of atlanta to get a fresh perspective on everything – looking forward to the change – we have been traveling quite a lot this past year even as far away as Alaska – and have been doing it by plane, train, bus, and car and feel it’s just time for a fundamental change of location 🙂 i have finally cleared all of my christmas takes and am trying to figure out where to pitch them – research for current projects seems to be my weakest area – i have really appreciated the pitch sheets ya’ll have been sending out 🙂

  35. Ewa says:

I admire your approach to every topic.
I have just finished a not very christmassy song and hope i will be able to show it.

  36. Ber says:

I wrote 3 Christmas songs. Two I named merry Christmas; one at slow pace and the other at fast pace.

The third one titled "I Want". I entered it in a song contest.

  37. Timothy W. Webb says:

    Hi Chris,
Thanks for the tips. I am down in the Virgin Islands as we speak, and was able to collaborate with my calypso singer, working on putting together our third song together. I’m pitching a holiday song today, and just sent my 2021 holiday album off for re-mastering today. Cheers!

    • Chris SD says:

Double hard to write a Christmas song in the islands with the beautiful weather. Well, I guess that is only coming from someone who originally came from Canada. 🙂

    • Chris SD says:

I can’t listen to songs here and if you are a member you’ll have to use the submission form, Gary.

  38. Harold Frazee says:

Well, funny you put it all this way. This is the summer of some of my biggest change. First, retirement from full time teaching, second travel to Italy w/ 75 people, Texas for a gig, Netherlands on a cruise and possibly play on the ship, building my new home studio and waking up to freedom. This has opened my soul and imagination to new perspectives! I couldn’t agree more on the new view concept. Thanks for all your insight and the program. I haven’t been able to catch everything in the course (I might retake in the fall) but what I see is awesome.

    • Chris SD says:

You are living proof of this concept, Harold. Have a great time with all your travels and may it have a great impact on your music.

Hi Chris, Cookies for Santa hope you enjoy!

  40. PAUL L VINES says:

I have a Christmas song I’ve recorded. Where do I send my Christmas song and is there an entry fee?

    • Chris SD says:

There is no entry fee, but I can’t listen to songs here and if you are a member you’ll have to use the submission form.

  41. Robert Hunt says:

I’ve spent a lot of time at the beach, working on a house and riding the waves. I wrote and am in the process of recording a worship song using some lyrics from Amazing Grace mixed with my own and the tune is different just like you are talking about with the Christmas songs. It’s called Wondrous Love I’m also recording another one I wrote several years ago about Sampson and Delilah called Seven Years of Bad Luck. (Blues) Here’s a sad Christmas song I wrote and recorded a couple years ago. Don’t know it’s Christmas until the chorus.

    • Chris SD says:

Great to hear, Robert, I can’t listen to songs here and if you are a member, you’ll have to use the submission form we sent.

  42. Evelyn says:

Hi Chris – great advice as ever! I have a fun song called ‘Don’t go drinking with Santa’ that I’d love to send in but I haven’t seen the submission link? Evelyn from Scotland 😊🎶

    • Chris SD says:

Thanks Evelyn, if you are a member, you definitely should have got it. Just reach out to the team if you didn’t and they will set you up.

  43. Pat says:

    Hi Chris
Thanks for trekking video and the valuable Christmas songwriting tips.. I have written two Christmas songs that I would love the opportunity to submit. Best regards.

  44. jeri cain rossi says:

i have some good news! i got fired from my soul-sucking job last week. so i’ve been able to catch up with the class and metadata. and song writing. i’m so lucky and inspired to have signed up to this class and it to be everything and more than i hoped. money? shit. debt? yup. i asked myself “on my deathbed if it’s a choice do i really want to die with a high credit score, or do i want to make authentic art and music i’m proud and energized with regardless of the cost and debt?” This week has truly been xmas in july. (oh and staring a job i’ve been wanting next week.) Chris I am all in, even when the universe sticks its leg out to trip me-it’s just trying to get my attention….cheers!

    • Chris SD says:

Thanks so much for the kind words about ‘The Art Of The Song Pitch’. We have so many students who have gone on to get sync placements based on the relationships they’ve made there. Hang in there and I’ll see you on the next coaching call!

  45. sonia says:

Liked those points/advice you put forward, Chris – especially the point of "not too many ornaments on tree" – nice imagery there!

  46. Johnny says:

We’ve been schlepping about in our RV for the last couple of years (forced retirement, thanks to COVID), so shifting perspective is the name of the game. We’re shifting this summer as we head back East from Seattle this summer, cruising the Trans Canada Highway system instead of the US Interstate system again. I have some finished an recorded from a project that didn’t pan out. Definitely write from a unique POV. So, what do I do next?

    • Chris SD says:

Can you tell me what you mean in your second last sentence? Are you talking about a finished recording but the band didn’t work out? Very cool you have been RVing. We did that for 2.5 years and loved it… in a Westfalia though. 🙂

  47. Jerry Heessels says:

    Hello Chris!

Here Jerry from the Nethelands. Thanks to you I’m following (as a different angle in summer) a Bobby Owsinski 8-week course (The Music Mixing Accelerator Gold – after the 3-days Mixing EQ Challenge). Your Christmas song mail in July did remember me having a Christmas/Good year song on the shelf, written by a friend of mine (cosongwriter and producer) and sung by another friend. He was a studio background and demo singer (one of the demo songs – a song called Gliding On Water, also cowritten by my friend) came on a greatest hits cd from The Fortunes). But this Christmas/Good Year song was probably his last demosong before he sadly died end 2022.
Yet I’d like to send it to you for a chance to submit, ’cause in fact it’s a love song with not too much ornaments.
    Hope to hear from you.

  48. Bea says:

Hi Chris, Bea Palya from Hungary :), my first comment here but not the last – I love your insights here! I am writing a Christmas album now, and I got to your video :). haha. I always write original songs, and can’t agree more with your 1st point: make it as a song on its own, not especially Christmas-style. For me, it is not a problem 🙂 and still it was so good the have this confirmation. Well, my "problem" if it is a real one . that I write in Hungarian.. up until now. But maybe this is the moment I open my songwriting capacities to a larger world, and this video gave me inspiration. The album’s title is probably "Songs of Light" (maybe with a b side "Songs of Dark". I have already a pre-tracklist with titles, I share it here:
    1. Not The Beagle
    2. War And Peace
    3. Lying Under The Tree
    4. Celebrating Love
    5. Soothing With Song
    5. Voices Of Rites
    6. The Miracle
    7. Coldsong
    8. The Gift

    Thanks Chris!!!!
